One December, long ago, science students at a Jr. Hi School were sent around the
school to gather bacteria so they could learn how to use a Petri dish. When
they came to my Jr Hi band and asked for some free yucky stuff I said to one of
the clarinet players, "Here is a new reed for you, free". When she removed her
old reed I gave it to the science students. (I knew this girl hadn't cleaned her
mouthpiece since school started nor had she removed the ligature). The crud off
her reed filled the petri dish over night while all other petri dishes hadn't
shown any growth. The word got out fast, all over the school and boy, was she
embarrassed. She kept her reed and mtpc clean from then on.

If I ever left a reed on the mtpc it would kill the response. Of course, if you
forget to remove the reed you probably have forgotten to losen the ligature.
The continuous pressure from the ligature would compress the bottom fibers of
the reed leaving an imprint of the mtpc opening. this causes the reed to be
closer to everything below it on the mtpc and causing awful things to happen to
the tone, response and resistance.. How can you guys get away with this and not
have any negative effects.
