I second Tom's suggestion, which as I understood it was to store the reed on
the mouthpiece in a plastic bag to prevent the reed from drying completely.
I have no idea what a microscope would discover, but I have a feeling that a
lot of things we handle and even put into our mouths would gross us out as
much. I stored my reeds that way for years and had, during the period, no
doctor bills at all. I learned not to use the plastic bags during the most
humid parts of the summer because I did get some mildew from time to time on
the reed backs, but not during the winter. I still store the reed on the
mouthpiece, and with a plastic cap the effect over a short period of time (a
day or so) is almost the same.
