Subj: [kl] G hole solved

Today I learned the answer to my question about wall thickness of
the G hole 'chimney' (right hand). It's obvious once you see it, and it
was partly the reason why the repairman decided to bend one of my keys
just a little bit.

The G hole itself has to be larger for acoustical reasons, but the
'chimney wall' has to be thinner for non-acoustical reasons -- namely,
in order that there will be enough room for your fourth finger to come
down without bumping the B (sliver) key.
I assume that if I had the proper measuring tools to compare the G
hole's location on my old student horn (which has the thicker and 'more
forgiving' wall), I would discover that there is more space between the
G and A holes on the student horn, such that a thin wall isn't required.
Perhaps having more room on the student horn to place my finger is why I
felt that it was "more forgiving."

Cheers,
Bill
