When I played for Cabaret, we had a mock band on stage except for the
accordion player, who was for real. He was the only one on stage who knew
how to play anything. The rest of the band faked it while the real music
came from the pit. Those of us in the pit thought it must be pretty dull up
on the stage, so we livened things up a bit with a bubble machine made from
a hassock fan and a few people blowing bubbles in the breeze. The audience
loved it, but the production's director was livid. It was quite a surprise
when he hired us back to do his next production.
