Per the Beethoven 8 discussion, your dissatisfaction begs the question:
do you have (a) the orchestral score of the piece (not a mini-score, mind
you, especially not with Pines), and (b) a credible recording? Can you be
a little more specific about what *does* make sense to you about the move-
ment, to give us a starting point for discussion? My knee-jerk reaction to
your query is to say, "Do a formal and thematic analysis of the movement,
and then expand that outward to the context of the entire work." It's amaz-
ing, regardless of the level of command you may or may not possess over your
individual notes, how empowered you feel when you are able to grasp the en-
tire work as a concept, whatever the work may be.
