In your area, is marching band mandatory only if your child enters
the music program, or is the music program itself mandatory? >>

I'm going to jump in here. My school, Dallas High School, no longer has a
marching band program. However, local schools over in Salem have marching
bands still. The way I have come to understand it from friends involved in
those programs isthat directors in this area run it like this: If the student
auditions and is accepted into the *Wind Ensemble* then they are required to
participate in marching band. Most of the schools around here have a
"primary" band and a "secondary" band, and often times also some sort of jazz
group. Its usually the primary band that is required to also do marching
band.
