Subj: [kl] On stage bands . . . Cabaret

Mitch Bassman asked:

<<<OK. Every man who has every played in the onstage band in Cabaret and had
the "opportunity" to wear a dress, please chime in. You have never really
felt "fetching" until you've had that experience.>>>

Been there, done that. In a purple crushed velvet miniskirt, fishnet hose
and 4-inch FMPs (i.e., tall-heeled shoes). Some observations:

-- I don't know how you gals wear pumps, much less dance in them. I would
put them on right before going onstage, and pray the whole time as I
tottered to the appointed place on stage. Sheer terror.

-- An earlier string debated the merits of holding a tenor to the side, or
out in front. This has never been a problem for me; I play to the side
while sitting but easily transfer to the front when standing. Easy, that
is, until the saxophone pushes one of the foam "breasts" out of your dress.
It wasn't polite enough to plop on the floor, moreover, but instead got
caught on the neck strap hook. Flapped around until the number was over.

-- Small theater; only the gals could get dressed there. Guys dressed up
at home, had there makeup done on arrival. So one night, running late to
the gig, got pulled over by a Washington State Trooper -- in the aforesaid
purple crushed velvet miniskirt and fishnet stockings -- who ran me through
a field sobriety test. I passed, but got a run in my hose (bother!) so had
to buy some more on the way in.

This was a fun thing for a college student; I am certain than I won't be
doing it again any time soon.
