I sense a new, endless thread starting here.

Boehm experimented for years with materials and mechanisms. I have heard
eminent contemporary physicists praise Boehm's meticulous attention to the
details of his research method - always trying to put observation before
theory. That does NOT mean that all of his underlying assertions are
correct, however. Our understanding of the physics of materials has
improved (or, at least, appeared to improve) in 150 years. He used what he
saw and heard to make marvelous changes in the flute - changes which have
survived almost intact. He didn't always understand fully why those changes
worked.
