A few years ago I had my entire University of Richmond clarinet studio
make reeds. They started from tubes, quartered them, flattened them, etc.
In about three hours spread over two classes, they had made some reeds.
The best reed in the class came from my least accomplished student (at
least from the point of view of his clarinet skills). He spent his
summers doing light carpentry and painting houses. In retrospect, it was
not a surprise. He was the only one in the room with experience using the
tools.
