<><> I'm talking about *proper* singing; that is, of songs,
not operatic crap.

....well, I think that Tony means "melodies that a beginner has a
chance of singing without bungling them completely." Or at least, this
is what I hope he means.

Warp their little minds young, that's what I say.

Anecdote time: When my daughter was about five years old, I took
her with me to the market. We happened to walk past a vacant storefront
window that was whitewashed so that nobody could see inside. We heard
singing of such quality that my daughter was _RIVETED_ to the pavement.
I couldn't get her to move.
So I knocked on the door. After my second or third knock, somebody
let us inside. They were rehearsing Tosca, and Tosca was making her
bargain for Cavaradossi's life.
The next night, Kristina demanded that I take her back to hear
more singing. This time, the fellow who answered the door asked me,
"You were here last night, weren't you? Do you want to be a
supernumerary? We need a scribe, a Swiss guard and a soldier."
I ended up being all three. Shooting Cavaradossi was lots of fun.
But the best part was listening to _truly transcendent singing_ for 3
weeks. (and learning just a little about performance along the way)

So, Tony, I hope that 'crap' was hyperbole or humor.

Cheers,
Bill
