Subj: [kl] red plastic mouthpiece?
Date: Sun, 27 Aug 2000 14:54:54 -0400

I asked if anyone had ideas about the identity of an old calrinet mouthpiece
with no markings, that appears to be black but is really dark red when held
up to strong light.

Gary Truesdail wrote,
>I remember red plastic mouthpieces for sax that had
>the name "Runyon" but they were clearly red and not
>so dark they looked black.

Thanks for the good suggestion. Someone else also thought of Runyon and
e-mailed me a web address for the company (whose founder, Santy Runyon, is
now in his 90s!):

www.runyonproducts.com

and also another site with good photos of Runyons:
http://www.saxgourmet.com/runyon/mouthpiece.pdf

I wasn't able to access the saxgourmet pictures, which my software or
security program or some blankety-blank thing declines to download, but I did
look at the Runyon site. From what I can tell, all his mouthpieces have the
Runyon logo on them; and I think Gary Yruesdail is right that the red ones
look red in reflected light, not just in refracted light. Someone else
suggested Vandoren two-tones, but I'm pretty sure this isn't a Vandoren.
Aren't those also marked? I don't think a marking has rubbed off this one,
unless it was *only* paint or a decal and not stamped into the plastic at
all. There's no sign that it ever had a marking.

Thanks very much for trying to help me ID the thing. I'll report back after
I put a cork on it and try it out.

Lelia
