Neil,

I bought a 31/2 Legere several weeks ago. It was too soft. So, I purchased a
#4. It was too stiff. I normally play on Grand Concert 41/2-5's & the #4 was
stiffer than those. As I wasn't subscribed to the list at that time, I was
told by a friend that he had read dipping the reed in boiling water for 1
second would make it softer, the opposite of what you're saying. So, I dipped
it. The reed went from a #4 to a #11/2 or worse. I only put the tip in very
briefly.

If you find out how to increase the stiffness, I would like to know.
