It seems meaningful to me to ask: "Is there any point in doing the
experiment, or will your response to the experiment depend on what the
result appears to be?"
Really and truly, the academic or scientific spirit is to state _in
advance_ the details of the experiment and to state _in advance_ what
the relevancy of the results will be to the hypothesis:

As for the 'city slicker' part, well.... I'll take that as
good-natured humor.
