Bottom line: opinions in this arena have been made without justification
for two centuries. It is time for evidence in support of those opinions.

Would you accept as sufficient evidence:

(1) if a "machine mouth" device was used to play a simple cylinder,
which could be replicated precisely and easily in different materials,
and

(2) if the frequency analysis (such as Joe Pyne has the equipment for)
either did or did not show a difference? This experiment would include
several tubes made from identical material in order to estimate standard
deviation (experimental error).

Or would you persist in saying: "That's fine for a simple tube, but
it doesn't say anything about a clarinet"?

It seems to me that the above experiment is feasible in today's
environment, especially since several "machine mouths" already exist.
