You know, they actually at one time manufactured a handful of steel double
basses. I've had the opportunity to play on one before, and can we say, it
sounded like hell. I think metal materials are best left for brass
instruments and people should leave it at that.
But, Bill, I think when you asked the question as to whether a clarinet has
a "sound board", think about the reed! At least that's how I understand it.

ROTFLMAO!! Terrific reply, Stewart. But there is a difference
between violin and clarinet. The body of a violin is designed to be a
sounding board, whereas the body of a clarinet is not. The question
is: does a clarinet body have some sounding board (and/or sound
absorbing) effects anyway?
