Well, plastic wasn't too readily available back in the 1700's :^)

Of course using the heavy "blackwoods" is a relatively recent phenomena; I
have read that the reason the blackwoods are used is because the increase in
the number and spacing of holes along with the increase in the number of
mechanical attachments forced the makers into using a more dense wood than
boxwood or other light wood. I don't have the citation handy.

There are professional clarinets made of substances other than wood; the
Buffet Greenline series and Howarth clarinets spring to mind.
