Thank you. The way that Tolkien used these words fairly screamed
out that I was missing something, and now I understand.

<><> If I remember right, the context in Tolkien was the lair of
Shelob, the gigantic spider. The hobbits taunted her, "Attercop,
attercop!" She took this as an ethnic slur, lost her temper and made a
fatal mistake.

Yes, very close. Actually Bilbo sang it to all of the spiders, all
of whom lost their tempers and made their mistakes.

Now to get back on topic: (remembering Tony Pay's story about
"Maestro, _I_ read...")

If a person who doesn't believe in returning mouthpieces wants to
buy one that is as different as possible from what he has already -- not
because he's dissatisfied with what he has, but just out of desire to
experiment and become more experienced -- and if this person currently
plays a B45, which mouthpiece would folks on this list recommend as a
"Try-something-completely-different" experiment?
Would you simply look up the size and length of B45's opening and
move in the opposite direction? Would your choice be influenced by the
bore of your clarinet?

Thank you,
Bill
