<><> Is the hole itself [G right hand] the same size, and only the
wall thicker?

I used to have a quality micrometer for machining, but I can't find
it right now. With an ordinary "see through" plastic ruler that is
graduated in mm, it appears obvious to me that: (a) the student Yamaha
wall is thicker, and (b) the student Yamaha hole is larger also.
At first glance, a larger hole would be _more_ difficult to cover
reliably, not less. Perhaps the larger hole offers a tactile sensation
of "deeper valley" for the finger to settle into, and thus the larger
hole guides the finger more obviously?
By the way, this particular Howarth is the older "S2" with larger
bore.

<><> Which side of the hole does your finger tend to uncover, when
it does that unwantedly? Is it the side nearest your fingertip, or the
side farthest away from your fingertip?

Neither. To the best of my perception, my fourth finger remains
'flat' across all of the hole, but sometimes the finger (definitely
unwantedly) slides parallel to the instrument's axis and toward the
mouthpiece (and closer to my third finger). When I wrote "up", I was
thinking of the mouthpiece as 'up' and the bell as 'down'.
