A good story to relate.....which goes beyond clarinets and to mouthpieces:

Lawrie Bloom, John Yeh and I were preparing a Mozart Divertimento for a
recital on our campus two years ago. I had recently purchased a Charles
Bay mouthpiece for my Basset Horn, and Lawrie was playing on a Robert
Scott refaced mouthpiece on his Basset. John endoreses Yamaha, but was
playing on the CSO's basset horn...made by Leblanc. During a break in the
rehearsal, we were just sitting there talking about equipment, and Lawrie
asked what mouthpiece I was using...I told him.....he said he really liked
the sound of it as well as the Robert Scott. I turned to John and asked
him what mouthpiece he was playing on.....he said, "Gee I don't
know.....", took a look at the mouthpiece and said, "I think it's the
Leblanc that came with the horn."

While John could play on ANYTHING and make it sound good, it was still
good for a laugh...and also to prove that whatever works is usually best.
