I looked it up, and found one post saying much the same thing as Bill --
there may be others.

The reason I ask is because I was advised when young, and sometimes
nowadays also give the advice, that it's quite worthwhile (if you can
afford it) to buy a high quality secondhand instrument to begin with.

The reasoning is that if you want to sell it after a bit, you'll get
about what you paid for it. And it will be a good beginning.

This is the first I've heard about student instruments being
'forgiving'. The explanation of Bill's experience could be that he
found it difficult to switch to another instrument he wasn't used to.

Are there technical details of what allows you to cover the holes 98% or
99% on a student instrument and still get the notes? It seems unlikely
to me, but perhaps it's rather that the holes are smaller, which I
*would* understand.

(By the way, I also found a post saying that I think that
polycylindrical clarinets have generically bad tone quality.
Interesting.)
