Christine, it is great you are getting back to playing music after such a
long time.
In addition to what has been said before, I would like to add:

Another possibility for mouthpieces - Walter Grabner and his Clarinet
Xpress. I own one of his mouthpieces - he faced it for me - and am quite
happy. He has said he will be coming out with a student model, which will
cost somewhat less, so you may want to check this out. I would suggest
either a Rovner ligature or an inverted Bonade. I had success with both of
these; the Bonade is reasonably priced. As I got my Rovner while I was
still in the Navy music program, I have no idea how much they cost these
days.

I too am a happy Yamaha clarinet player. I own a YCX 72, which has the
inserted tone holes (I think this is how it was described...David is more
knowledgeable on these matters than I) - I simply felt it played best for me
of the several YCL's and YCX's I tried at the time.
One of my students plays on a YCL24 (I hope the number is correct) - the
beginner horn Yamaha makes. It plays fairly well, and would also be
suitable if you don't want to chunk down a lot of money at the get go. I
have also had some students who actually had good experiences with (great
intake of air) the Artleys (shudder). The ones that are good are pretty
decent; however, the majority are pretty dreadful, so caveat emptor.
Another possibility, if you live in an area near a large university, is to
check the bulletin boards (real and virtual) for the University. Students
often have to unload some pretty decent horns and accessories in order to
pay for school.

Good Luck with whatever you decide to do.

Patty Smith
