Could be on strings, too (I haven't really studied strings in depth, only
keyboards), but I was only referring to the split key organs.

That was probably in reference to the "wolf tones" present on the stringed
instruments such as violin, viola, cello, etc. There was a very good article
in Scientific American discussing this very subject (it was before the
redesign of the magazine, so that must place it around 10 years back).
