>This has been pointed out to me before. Perhaps it's because we actually
don't play in equal temperment? Sure, the instrument makers try their
darndest to start them out that way, but don't we all adjust to get the
"true" intervals, as opposed to the one-size-fits-all approximation that our
keyboard friends must live with?

I believe we, playing in an ensemble, play in just temperament; adjusting
and pushing and pulling here and there to make every chord sound right. At
least that's what I got from reading this book that I used for my term paper
on temperaments (by Ll. S. Lloyd). We seem to be ever adjusting our pitch to
blend with our cohorts, unlike our piano-playing friends, who plunk away and
what comes out is the result of the piano tuner's competence. Lucky them!
