Register key

Early clarinets had no wrap around key.
I think at the very beginning there was no Bb tube extending into the
clarinet.
Later many clarinets had tubes extending into the bore.

Maybe Albert decided to have nothing intruding but still to have the
length of the speaker tube with a wrap around type.

You would have to be quite rough with the instrument to break the key.
At any rate you might have to be more careful than with the key on the
back.

The modern day German clarinets have a side key. The mechanism is quite
secure but still situated on the side.

Heckel, in the last century made some clarinets with two side Bb keys
opposite each other, opening at the same time.

It looks odd. The company said that the Bb was much better and whole
upper register was better.
Maybe that key didn't hold up with extensive use. It's no longer
available.
