One of the places our orchestra rehearses is rather small and sometimes the
trumpets are directly behind the clarinets. I will wear earplugs in
rehearsal on those occasions. The trumpet bells are so close, it is just not
at all good for the ears of the player's who are the direct recipient of that
volume of sound. We have asked the conductor if there is another way we
could set up, and sometimes it is done, but it somehow goes back to the old
way. I keep the earplugs in my case. At the last rehearsal, I wore only one
because the trumpets were on my left. Hey, this one earplug in your left or
right ear isn't like the earring in your left or right ear, is it? I
certainly hope not.
