Im my area, few to none of the schools REQUIRE band, but some at least
ENCOURAGE it. (Personal opinion: any attempt to FORCE a student to take
band (beyond one year, anyway) is just a burden upon those who WANT to be
there.) Buying band instruments is very expensive, especially for those
who don't think their child will stick it out, which is why instrument
rentals are very popular, and are a major part of my employers' business.
One local school district (Midland, MI) has the means to provide ALL
students with a school-owned instrument for the FIRST year; after that, you
are on your own. Theoretically, by that time the uncertainty should be
gone. At that point, many parents just BUY an instrument outright, rather
than messing around with renting. Midland schools, by the way, have some
pretty good bands, and orchestras, too!

If you have to mic a saxophone, the rest of the band is too loud.
