In Lubbock, Texas, at least three of the four high schools (Lubbock,
Coronado, and Monterey) have most instruments available for rental (or loan
or whatever.... point is the school furnishes them:)). I am not positive
about the others, but I know that Lubbock High (my school) has tons of
clarinets and flutes available, as well as rarer instruments such as contra
bass clarinets and an english horn. Granted, the majority of the students
that play the lower cost instruments (flute, clarinet, alto sax, etc.) buy
their own (some have two... one for marching and one for concert). And,
addressing the issue;-), no one is required to take band, but it is LISD's
policy to require one full credit of fine arts (Theatre, band, choir,
orchestra, etc., etc.). Hope this helps:).
