Bill,
In my school the students do not have to take band, but if they do, the
school furnishes only the larger instruments like tubas, french horns,
baritones, oboes, bassoons, tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone, bass
clarinet, and the concert and marching percussion. Percussionists buy a
percussion kit with a small set of bells and a practice pad. We do not begin
on some of these instruments like bari sax, tenor sax, and bass clarinet.
The students must purchase the flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet,
trombone, and the percussion kit. They must purchase the mouthpiece and
cleaning supplies for the school instruments. They are also responsible for
any damage that occurs while the instrument is checked out to them. There
are other schools that do it differently, but what we do is pretty much the
norm in Texas. Some schools charge a rental fee for the school instruments.
Hope that information is of benefit.
