I've just bought the edition of Brahms' Quintet performed by Shifrin and the
Emerson Quartet (1999 DG).
I was listening the CD and I said "Ehi... wait a moment... this is
Brymer/Allegri!"
So I took my Brymer/Allegri edition (1979 DECCA) and I've done a deep
comparison.
Well... they are ABSOLUTELY the same performance. The players are different
but tone, tempos, phrasing, rallentandi... the rest is the same!
I've played the forth movement with 2 CD players perfectly synchronized:
well... you have to wait at 1.08 to have just a very little asynchrony. I've
sampled the two edition and I've used the left channel of one and the right
channel of the other... unbelievable!
I don't know... I don't think it is casual but there is no reason to
reproduce a performance in every details. Perhaps it is just a coincidence.
