If slower equals harder, then yes. The further the fingers have to travel,
the more work must occur (not that the fingers necessarily get tired). Al-
though some would argue that the difference is negligible, those who are con-
cerned with attaining the most fluid and efficient technique concern themselves
with this issue. I've had the rings on all of my instruments lowered by a com-
petent tech. After making that modification, it becomes a matter of refining
one's techniqe to exploit the change -- by building muscle memory into the
fingers, such that they maintain a minimum height from the body of the instru-
ment while playing, without muffling the sound or intonation by hovering too
closely to the toneholes.
