Long ago when I was a teenager I had the great privilage of having a few
alto sax lessons with Fred Hemke. Before my lesson he taught another kid
carinet. I used to go to my lesson half an hour early just so I could hear
Fred Hemke play clarinet from outside his studio. God, he sounded great!
I believe he told me clarinet was his first instrument. All that sax
playing certainly didn't mess his clarinet chops.
