David,
I totally agree with you. There are many clarinetist who also play fine
saxophone. I'm also wondering if there are more clarinetist who play sax
well than saxophonists who play clarinet well, i.e. saxophone as the first
instrument or principal instrument. Maybe I'm wrong. One question - don't
be offended David - do you play saxophone? When I play any size clarinet
there is no big change in finger technique. When I play saxophone I
concentrate on certain areas that do not transfer from clarinet (palm keys,
low register, middle c coordination, altisimo fingerings, etc). On the
plus side this contributes to finger dexterity but on the minus side it is
not identical to clarinet. It seems that the sax fingerings are closer to
maybe a German clarinet fingering system - any German clarinetist out there
that would like to comment?

On another note. Adolph Sax was first a clarinetist. Juilliard does
not now have a saxophone major. Eugene Rousseau's DMA is in clarinet from
the U of Iowa.
