Subj: [kl] Sucking my finger
Date: Mon, 7 Aug 2000 13:30:20 -0400

I recently cut my finger, and I'm worried about how I should suck it -- with
my eyes open, or with my eyes shut?

Sucking seems to hurt less if I keep my eyes shut, but I don't know whether
I'm imagining this. I know that some people say that it definitely hurts
less with your eyes shut, but others say that this is nonsense, and it hurts
just the same whether your eyes are open or shut.

How do I know whether I'm fooling myself? Do people find that it hurts more
if they suck *too hard* with their eyes open? Is sucking with eyes shut
automatically more gentle?

I also wonder whether I'm actually feeling the *right sort of pain* when I
have my eyes open. If I keep my eyes shut, can I assume that the pain is
automatically OK?

Of course, I could try to work this out myself, or go to a doctor -- if I
can find one that I can trust -- but how would I know that? Is just *any*
doctor qualified to give me sucking lessons, if it turns out that I need
them? And are there specialists in both techniques?

I could see a psychiatrist, even; but I think that the best thing is to ask
the experts on this list what I should do. I'm sure that someone here can
tell me what's *really* going on with my sucking.

Tony
