Bill says, "And speaking of London pubs.... My Dad and Mom once took me
on a
barge down the Thames when I was a kid, and they stopped at a dock along
the river in front of a pub in order to play darts, but (of course) my
Dad left me in the barge with the captain's wife and my Mom. When my
Dad and the captain returned with a description of what it was like
inside, I suffered a little bit and I still remember it clearly. My Dad
lost a pound or two at the dart board."

Sounds like "Jack the Ripper" part of London to me Bill - - - -

Bill says, "I don't know if it's still
possible to hitch rides on family barges these days?"

Still possible Bill, altho` not hitching. The captain will want some few
little round coins for his trouble.
But there are a few restaurant launches on the Thames. (It`s some years
since we ate on one). Upstream, there are also the "long narrow boat"
companies where you may also (again) rent for family breaks. Designed
originally for the narrow canal, living/working barges connecting rural
towns with industrial areas.

I have read your 10 reasons, and am now resting <my> chops. (See else-where
for more comments).
I`ve thought of the 11th reason - just plain laziness!
