Does anyone know of facial exercises one can do apart from playing the

Hello, Gary. I asked the same question here about 6 months ago,
and the consensus then was the same as Tony's advice now.
I suppose that part of the difficulty is that you need to *hear*
the result of setting your muscles a particular way in order to know
that you're exercising the appropriate muscles to the appropriate
degree.

Another conversation that we had here recently was the issue of
practising just a little more once you're really and truly tired. My
thought was the body-builder's adage: No pain, no gain. The real
progress comes (allegedly) when your muscles are complaining, and the
microfibers in your muscles suffer tiny rips and tears which aren't
damaging over the long term, but they stimulate your body's repair
systems to kick into action and build new muscle.
The opposite point of view is that practicing when you're pooped
may reinforce bad embouchure habits.
The consensus here was that re-setting your embouchure one more
time after you're blowing out the sides of your mouth and trying again
is a valuable thing rather than a bad thing. Someone on this list
recounted advice to this effect that he or she had received from a
teacher who was also principal clarinet in one of the major orchestras
(I've forgotten the name), and nobody argued against the idea.

Cheers,
Bill
