I use this technique you are describing, and it works quite well for me,
actually. My teacher tried to correct this, I guess because he toungues with
the tip and thinks that "anchoring" is wrong. After about 2 weeks of trying
to use the tip o my tongue, I was so frustrated with it! When I try it now,
I sound horrible! So, I just stuck with my anchor technique and I haven't
gotten any complaints from my teacher or any of my conductors (inclding St
Louis Symphony conducting staff).

I guess my point is, I've never gotten any complaints from directors or from
my teacher really, and it has worked for me. Of course, I can't
double-tongue, but I can single tounge relatively fast and clean. But how
many can double-tongue and actually have it sound *good*? (I'm sure some of
you can.) If it works for you like it works for me, do it. I've not had any
problems.

Subject: [kl] Anchor Tongueing - Oh Horrors!!

I recently discovered to my sheer horror that ever since I started
playing clarinet 3 and a half years ago I've been anchor tongueing (at
least I think I am). The tip of my tongue actually rests inside my
bottom lip, touching the moist, red part, and it stays there when I
tongue. I am, in fact, touching my tongue to the reed, but further back
from the tip. My tongueing this way is quite effective, light and
beautiful, but I am told it's wrong and that I'll never be able to
tongue quickly this way.

My attempts in practicing the more correct way ie. touching the tip of
the tongue to the tip of the reed or something similar, have so far (3
weeks) been pathetic. I can do it if I concentrate consistently only up
to about C in the staff. After that I squeak like crazy. Also, of
course, my tongueing is crude and harsh this way. I do realize that
undoing 3 and a half years worth of incorrect technique cannot be fixed
overnight, but some of you offer some suggestions for practice, or do
some of you use anchor tongueing at all?

I could use some major help, here!

Thanks!!

Audrey
