Lecture: The subject lies in shark infested waters
There seeming to be no pattern or rationale.
I am unable, for example, to explain why
Philipp Dreisbach (1891-1980) in Germany
played with vibrato, but his few recordings
show that he did! (CC 0010)
When I wrote the history of "The Clarinet
on Record" (c.1994) for the Cambridge Companion
Colin Lawson asked if I had read Philip's book (1992).
However, I avoided the subject of performance influences
and simply presented to facts as I found them with as little
interpretation as possible. Compositional influences are
a little safer.

Delecluse and Lancelot (1920-) studied with Auguste Perier
Delecuse was professor of clarinet at the Paris Con. 1949-78
No one plays like either of them now.....
Have you heard any of Perier's recordings? (CC0005 and 0010)
Ted Planas used to comment about his teacher Delecluse
(he was a terror) en route from pillar drill to lathe
but it is now too late to ask him. Delecluse once described
Leister's tone as "curious". There are still many who remember
Delecluse - Phillip Cuper for instance. Delecluse students include
Suzanne Stephens (USA/Germany), Seiji Yokokawa (Japan)
and Algirdas Budrys ((Lithuania)

Recordings can be unfair, unrepresentative and misleading
For example Thurston left very few recordings.
He hated making recordings, but he was a giant-killer in the concert hall
or recital room. His best, the Bliss Quintet, has not yet been
released complete on CD. The Finale is on Clarinet Classics CC 0005
He was the first ever to record the Brahms Quintet complete at the age of
about 21-2!
I have heard all of his commercial recordings and some of them
are such that it would be inappropriate to comment here.

I'm not sure exactly where it will lead, but your information is very
helpful.
