Purely a wild guess, but could the notation be an obsolete way of saying to
hold the last note of the previous bar over one beat into the next (dotted
half note in the first bar, but with the last beat played as the first beat
of the NEXT measure)? Thus the second measure in current notation would
start with a quarter note D tied over from the first measure half note D.
See how that works.
