Probably not the microphone. The clarinet sound is notoriously difficult
to record, as it, like piano, is particularly susceptible to distortion
from flutter, small but rapid fluctuations in tape (or record) speed. This
results in the "watery" sound you hear. One of the advantages of digital
recording is that it all but eliminates flutter from the equation. On the
other hand, due to it's very slow tape speed, the relatively high level of
flutter is one of cassette's most severe limitations as a high fidelity
medium. Try a reel-to-reel deck at 7 1/2 inches per second or more, or MD,
or digital tape.
