I have tried a little taping of my playing but there is a watery or
fluttery sounding distortion expecially on the clarion notes. I am using
a Radio Shack mike that sells in the $40.00 range or a little less. I
wonder if the problem is the mike or the distance from the mike,
etc........

If it's worth $350 (US) to you, Sony makes a "professional Walkman"
with a small mike (1" = 25 mm, clips onto your shirt) and earphones that
stick into your ears sideways (instead of covering them flat). It has
adjustments for recording gain as well as speaker volume.
I wanted to hear myself 'from outside of myself' badly enough that
I bought one. I've recorded my instructor with it (duets, etc), and
then I compared the tape to what I hear in her studio. The two are
nearly identical without artificially enhancing the sound. (IMO)

Cheers,
Bill
