A $40 tape deck does not have the mechanical capacity to reproduce the sound
of a musical instrument with any accuracy, nor would the mike with it be any
good. Most $40 recorders would in fact use a built-in mike, which records
the sound of the drive mechanism along with the music.

I have an old Sony Professional Walkman which cost about $300 8 years ago or
so. It works pretty well and comes with an external mike, but it's not made
any more. Once you have a good recorder, the microphone is the key
variable. A really good mike can cost over $500-$1000. You could probably
create a decent set-up for around $500 these days.
