Uh, yeah - actually, I do quite often. After suffering through a period in
college when I couldn't practice in the practice rooms because I imagined
crowds of other clarinetists listening at the door and jeering, I now find
recordings of my performances quite reassuring. Not to say that there aren't
plenty of notes I'd like to take back! - but usually I find myself listening
to the recording and going, "Wow, is that really ME?!" I certainly hear all
the errors that I was SO acutely aware of in performance, but generally find
that they don't mar the overall musical effect as badly as I thought at the
time. It's sort of a "can't see the forest for the trees" thing - when I'm
listening to the recording I seem to get a better sense of the overall
performance - and that's usually better than I would have thought. Now if
only it worked that way with figure skating! When I see the tapes of my
programs, which felt like flying while I was skating them, I usually cringe!
