Get 1/4 inch (I.D.) soft latex rubber (not vinyl) surgical tubing from a
medical supply house. (I paid $1.00 for a foot of it.) Using approximately
1/2 inch per thumb rest, you have a good number years' supply.
This is what I did after reversing the thumb rests on my Leblanc Bb & A
horns.

Thanks to everyone for valuable input about the thumbrest issue. As the
discussion evolves, I am reminded of something I once did to my Bb/A
under duress. I took the standard old thumbrest off and turned it
upside down. Then I put it back on using the original holes for the
screws. This places the thumbrest high enough to feel better for those
of us who like 'em high, but it's anything but comfortable due to the
upward curve of the metal and the lack of padding. I remember I used
one of those little rubber thumbrest cushions - the ones that always get
lost just when you need them most - can't remember whether I used THAT
right-side-up or on its head. The rubber padding increased the comfort
factor, and I had a thumbrest I could use more successfully. Total cost
was negligible.
As I'm reminded of this, I think I will try it on the Eb and see how it
works, then dig out my elastic neckstrap if it doesn't. And another
thing we did in high school was to pad our thumbrests with thickish
slices cut from on old stethoscope. The tubing was terribly strong and
very narrow, so when we were able to jam these things on our thumbrests,
they didn't pop off and get lost. Anyone with connections in the
medical field might want to try this. And an old student of mine took
gauze and white tape and made a huge bandage for her thumbrest - looked
like it just came out of surgery!
