I understand that, and I think that it's been so intermixed in the past 40
or 50 years that I wonder if it's really inportant anymore. I mean, the St.
Louis Symphony has been said to have an "American" sound under Slatkin and a
more "European" sound under Vonk. It IS an American orchestra, at least I
have been under the impression and I hope they are since I am employed by
them! It just seems that today it has less meaning than it used to. And I'm
sticking with what I said earlier: If I like it, I like it. (Not implying I
that I gathered one is supposed to like one particular over another.)

Or maybe I should just keep quiet..

Ciao!

Lacy, I don't think that anyone in taking part in the discussion
suggested that you or anyone was obliged to like or dislike anything
based on the suggested character of the national sound involved.

The nature of the discussion was to address the accuracy of the
assertion that a national sound character exists.
