<><> Marching band...oh, man. Don't go there, sister! :)

I'm trying to figure out what's wrong with marching bands? Perhaps the
conversation that they engender, not the music itself? I mean, Mozart's
concerto wouldn't work too well for a marching band; but honestly,
Seventy-Six Trombones sounds better when they're marching across the
stage.
As for outdoor acoustics, it's a different ball game of course, but
one of the fine concerts that I attended was a symphony orchestra that
was adjusted for lack of reverberation, and they played on the edge of a
river in Finland. They played Finlandia and Beethovem Ninth and all
sorts of concert hall stuff -- it lasted almost 5 hours -- and it was
terrific.
And while I'm talking about it, one of their pieces (besides the
Ninth) was choral. The audience joined in (how many U.S. audiences can
or would dare to sing along with a choral symphony?). There was a ferry
chugging up the river, and the folks on the ferry (on their way home
from work or shopping, I imagine) made a second pass along the river
bank and sang it back to us. At that distance, and with amateur voices,
I can't call it magnificent.... but frankly, it was in a different way.

But I suppose that you folks aren't really talking about open-air
music. It must be something about the conversation that it leads to?

....so I won't go there either. <smile>

Cheers,
Bill
