But... is a metronome marking reliable?

For example... Poulenc's music has lot of tempo markings but when you heard
Poulenc himself playing his music he plays much more faster or slower.

In the 3th movement of the Sonata it is given a quarter=3D144 but I play at
160-168.

I found this gap (between the written tempo and the played one) in many
Poulenc's performance...

The third of Trois mouvements perp@-----.

I know there is a recording of the flute Sonata with Poulenc at piano but
I've ever heard of a recording of the clarinet sonata... I wish I had it!
