Since everyone seems to be looking for this magical combination [of
clarinet qualities] why can't someone at the manufacturing level do it?
Are individual tastes and styles of playing so diverse as to make this
an impossible quest?

Absolutely! I come from a small town with only one clarinet store,
and this store stocks only a couple of brands of each class of
instrument. One of the *MAJOR* benefits for me of attending
ClarinetFest was that I was able to try many different Bb instruments,
many different A instruments, and so forth.
Perhaps I shouldn't admit this ugly fact in public, but I was
unable to even play C-above-the-staff on a few of these instruments. I
was absolutely astounded to learn this.
As for the instruments that I could play.... well, do any of us
feel in the same mood each day? Do you always want the same flavor of
ice cream? Are there days when you don't want ice cream at all? If you
don't want the same thing each day, then how likely is it that two
different people will want the same thing?

Cheers,
Bill (who would kill for chocolate malted crunch ice cream in a
sugar cone right now, but the rest of the world isn't awake yet)
