The theoretical representation of the spectrum as a series of "harmonics"
must permit a further modification, for an exact spectral analysis of
instrument sounds shows that significant frequency variations of the
whole-number relationships of of the overtones occur with all instruments,
so that one can scarcely speak of "harmonics."

A drastic case of this has been produced in an experiment with organ pipes
by J. Meyer ... . ... Similar discrepancies can be discovered in most wind
instruments, for which R. W. Young has provided measurements.
