I was the one who brought up the marking of 42 (or was it 44, I can't
recall). I second Roger's call for Dan Leeson to help us out here. FWIW, I
agree with Roger that 42 is unbearably slow.
Regarding students learning Mozart, no sensible teacher would even try to
teach any of it to a student who is merely mediocre. But some students are
ready for an introduction, and it should be done slowly, with exposure to
the best recordings, guidance to phrasing properly, etc. I will also add
that even the best students, if not guided well learning music along the
lines of Mozart or other of the great composers, will either become
frustrated or just plain tired of it.
Now, as far as adult students go, I feel the adult learner brings a great
deal more musical experience with him or her, and can certainly make his/her
own choices as to what music s/he would like to learn. I have found adult
learners very open to new ideas and suggestions; also, there is a
sensitivity to musical communication that they have learned through previous
experience which, obviously, must be developed in the child learner.
