newer development at the ICA Clarinetfest
At Dr. Ormand's master class yesterday, one of the students was
given a booklet of excerpts from many different composers and asked to
play 5 or 6 of them, hopping rapidly from one to the next and not in the
order in which they appeared in the booklet. It was obvious how
grueling this can be -- changing mood & tempo & tone every minute or
two.
I've never seen a competition myself, and I can imagine that none
of them are 'lightweight' or 'trivial' events. But 'resetting' oneself
every minute or two, instead of following through with a basic mood for
an entire composition, seems particularly demanding to me.
Cheers,
Bill
